Signed 1977 Program-Poster Photograph

Scarce signed program-poster for a concert at Queen Elizabeth Hall on 8th May 1977 featuring Ligeti with the Stockholm Philharmonic Wind Quintet, Bruno Canino, Antonio Ballista and the Arditti String Quartet.  Signed in full by the composer in black biro beneath a double printed portrait. The concert, part of the Fifth London Music Digest, included the first performance in the UK of Ligeti's "Monument Selbstportrait Bewegung." At the concert he gave a talk and his "Six Bagatelles for Wind Quintet," the "Second String Quartet" and other pieces were also performed.  The program opens to a full poster on one side, with program details, biography, works list etc on the verso in folded program format. 8 x 8 inches; 16 x 24 inches fully opened. Very fine.

Original copyist partbook with airs for various voice types from operas by Lully and drinking songs (airs à boire) by Bertrand de Bacilly (1621–1690), Michel Lambert (ca. 1610–1696), et al. 94 pp, all except title leaf lined with five musical staves in the same size and style. Only fol. 2r-31v (first 60 pages with staves; vocal line only) and fol. 44v and 45v (musical notation in lute tablature) used. In ink throughout; various hands . Intriguing autograph letter signed from the important French operatic composer, dated exactly one week after the conviction of Alfred Dreyfus. 3 pp., October 22, 1894, addressed to a "Dear good friend."  Translated from the French, "The hazards of life and the hard necessity to obey it means that during these emotional days for you your old friend will be far away, in the cold, in the worries, in Brussels... - though I am unwell I will have to leave Paris - in spite of everything! and I leave!... - what thought will be mine! "Music Club" Notebook - 1909

Charming unidentified "music club" notebook from 1909–1910, probably Boston, containing handwritten notes and printed club handouts related to music and music history.  The opening pages, dated "Meeting of Nov 8," contain notes regarding counterpoint and harmony.  Handouts throughout provide an insight into the focus of each meeting, with titles such as "Folk Music," "The Epoch of Vocal Counterpoint," "The Rise of Secular Music," "Bach, Handel and Gluck," "The Beginnings of Modern Instrumental Music," "Mozart," "The Transition to the Romantic Style," "The Transition to the Romantic Period," and two final sessions both concerning "The Great Nineteenth Century Romanticists."  The club's texts of choice were Clarence Hamilton's Outlines of Music History and John Henry Cornell's Musical Form, both of which are referenced as a resource throughout.  Looseleaf lined paper bound with brass fasteners.  Wear to edges, else in fine condition.

Paris: Schonenberger. 1851. 8 vo. 95 pp. Sewn as issued, uncut with printed wrapper. Light staining to some margins, occasional underlining or notes in light pencil, spine mostly perished with chipping around the edges and front sheet separated. Rare.

An interesting early study of the great violinist and composer by the Belgian musicologist, composer, teacher and critic most famous for his influential "Biographie universelle des musiciens."

Manuscript psalm book, England, 18th century. Signed on both pastedown pages by one Stephen Sandercock on "September the 9th 1733" multiple times and in various styles and scripts, suggesting that the book belonged to a student; the same is suggested by awkward spellings (including "Pslam" instead of "Psalm", fol. 3r.). The book contains untexted tenor and bass parts to psalm tunes on the recto pages, as well as several psalm and hymn texts copied on the verso pages, and a few bass lines with text underlaid on the last pages.
