"Harmonium - 1. Negative Love" - Autograph Musical Quotation Signed

AMQS from the American composer, who has penned five measures for voice from "Negative Love," the first of three songs in his Harmonium cycle.  Adams has inscribed "For Steve Juscik," adding the text "This as yet my ease and comfort is" and signing "J Adams / October, 1988."  While the second and third movements of Harmonium are settings of Emily Dickinson poems, "Negative Love" takes as its text a composition by John Donne.  In fine condition.  8.5 x 5.5 inches (21.6 x 14 cm.). Softcover.  8vo.  47 pp. plus signed limitation page, hand numbered by the author 441 from the edition of 500.  Pale green paper covers contained in the original yellow paper wrappers, all slightly toned but otherwise in fine condition; block split from cover along rear gutter with glue remnants visible along front and rear gutters.  Several gatherings uncut.  Overall a crisp, beautiful copy.  Signed bilingual edition, translated by Roland Penrose and Mesens with illustrations by the author, including numerous poems concerning music, such as "La partition compléte / The Complete Score," accompanied by a two-page illustration of five staves covered in unusual key signatures and objects.  Another poem "Le clavecin bien tamponné / de Jean Sébastien Bach / Entièrement Fait a la main / par l'artiste / en personne," appears with an illustration of a hand playing the piano. Superb early right-facing bust doubleweight photograph of the dashing young American composer and conductor, signed and inscribed "To my good friend Ralph / Sam / West Chester / March '37." The recipient and dedicatee of the photograph was American composer and pianist Ralph Berkowitz, who with cellist Felix Salmond, performed Barber's Cello Sonata on March 7, 1937 at a surprise party arranged by Mary Curtis Bok for Barber's twenty-seventh birthday (Barbara Heyman, "Samuel Barber: The Composer and His Music," p. 115).  Signed photographs of Barber are extremely rare and desirable and this is a particularly early and remarkable example with a wonderful association.  8 x 10 inches. ALS from the important English composer to a Miss Grove recommending some of his pieces for her chorus.  2 pp., undated, on stationary for the English Opera Group: "Dear Miss Grove, Thank you for your nice letter. Congratulations on your fine success with your Choral Society. / I am pleased that you should want to sing something of mine.  A Capella. I have already written several pieces: - ‘A Boy was Born’ [op. 3] – a considerable & difficult piece, lasting about 20 minutes, with some boys’ voices (not difficult).  O.U.P. / ‘Hymn to St. Cecilia’ – a shorter & not so exacting piece, with a short soprano solo (can be taken for the choir) (Boosey’s Hawkes).  Apart from a part-song or two, Booseys are now bringing out Five Flower songs [op. 47] which I’ve only recently completed.  They’d be suitable for your choir, I should think. / In thanks, with best wishes for the choir. / Yours sincerely, [Signature]."  Vertical and horizontal crease with two small incidents of spotting, else fine.  8 x 7 inches (20.3 x 17.8 cm.). Collection of Correspondence Related to a Lecture on Language and Music in Italian Melodrama

Grouping of one Typed and three Autograph Letters Signed from the Italian composer to Professor Irma Antonetto of the Associazione Culturale Italiana regarding a speaking arrangement, dated April 1963 through January 1964.  In the first letter (ALS; Rome, 27 April 1963; 1 pp. on Conservatorio di Musica "Luigi Cherubini" Florence stationary), Dallapiccola suggests possible dates in December of the same year or January of the following when he might be available.  The second letter, a TLS dated 1 May 1963 (Florence; 1 pp. on A4 paper), notes, "I have included the drawing reproduced and enlarged, and an ugly portrait (the only one I have)."  In the third letter (ALS; Florence, 17 December 1963; 1 pp. on A4 paper), he discusses his lecture, which will concern the language of opera librettos, particularly Italian melodrama in the 19th century.  In the final letter (ALS;  Florence, 16 January 1964;  1 pp. on A4 paper), he confirms his arrival time.  Dallapiccola gave a lecture entitled "Words and Music in Italian Melodrama" at the ACI on January 24, 1964.  Expected mailing folds, two holes punched in left margin, some creasing, else fine.
