An original carte de visite photograph portrait of the American short story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." A reproduction by George G. Rockwood of New York on the original mount, with a caption on the verso: "This Photograph is COPIED from another picture, and must not be taken as a sample of our work direct from life."
