The op. 59 quartets were commissioned by the Russian ambassador to Vienna, Count Andreas Razumovsky, and are the first of what are now generally known as the "Middle Period" string quartets. In honor of the Russian dedicatee, Beethoven uses a "Thème russe" as the principal theme of the last movement of op. 59 no. 1. The quartets were first published in Vienna in 1808. (13726)
