Signed 1921 Dinner Menu of the Society of Arts and Sciences

Original dinner menu from a dinner given by the Society of Arts and Sciences in honor of the American theatrical producer, impresario, director and playwright David Belasco, signed on the cover by Belasco and by the theatrical producer and manager Daniel Frohman. A half-tone photograph of Belasco is tipped to the front cover. 4 pp. on heavy card, in fine condition. 5.5 x 9.25 inches (14.2 x 23.8 cm).

Known as "the Bishop of Broadway" because of his habit of wearing black clothes and a clerical collar (although he was in fact Jewish), David Belasco worked with such greats of the era as Cecil B. DeMille, D.W. Griffith, Helen Hayes, Lillian Gish and Mary Pickford, whose theatrical career he is credited with launching. He was the first writer to adapt the short story Madame Butterfly for the stage, and was also known for his technical innovations in the theater, bringing new standards of naturalism to the stage with real working props and advanced lighting techniques.
