Apollo with the Horae - DESIGN FOR A THEATER CURTAIN
Oil on canvas, signed lower right: O. Heyden. Measuring 26.5 x 29.75 inches [67 x 76 cm]. Beautifully framed in black wood with gilt fillet, overall 34 x 37.5 x 2.5 inches [86.5 x 95 x 5.5 cm].Depicting Apollo with the Horae (or Hours, the goddesses representing the seasons), this work is related to the painting mentioned in Boetticher's 1901 Malerwerke des Neunzehnten Jahrhunderts under the title "Apollon unter den Musen u. Grazien. Entwurf zu einem Theatervorhang für das neue Stadttheater zu Posen. Bez: Otto Heyden 1878." The latter painting was exhibited at the international exhibition at the Munich Glaspalast in 1879 and is listed in the corresponding catalogue as no. 432. Provenance: from the estate of the artist (according to the note on the verso of the frame: 'Aus dem Nachlass des Hofmalers Proffessor Dr Otto Heyden Berlin. - Apollo mit den Musen und Grazien').
Otto Johann Heinrich Heyden studied at the Berliner Kunstakademie with Wilhelm Wach and in Paris with Jules Cogniet. He is best known for his history paintings, some for the Berliner Schloss Palace, and also as a portraitist. (15311)
