While the 1909 and 1910 seasons of Diaghilev's troupe had consisted simply of a pick-up group of dancers on leave from the Imperial Ballet of Saint Petersburg, it was in 1911 that the impresario created the permanent troupe named the Ballets Russes and chose Michel Fokine as the chief choreographer. Ballets performed in 1910–1911 included Stravinsky's first commission, The Firebird, as well as Scheherezade, Petrouchka, Le Spectre de la Rose, and Swan Lake. (15583)
