Two Autograph Musical Quotations

Two autograph musical quotations, from the important opera conductor Luigi Arditi and the Polish opera singer and pedagogue Adelina Murio-Celli, penned on recto and verso of an album leaf. Arditi has penned two measures in A flat major from an unidentified composition, signed below and dated New York, April 5, 1881. Murio-Celli has penned a phrase of two measures with the text "Oh! breathe one word of gladness..." and dated New York, April 20, 1897. 9 x 6 inches. In fine condition.

One of the leading opera conductors of the second half of the 19th century, Luigi Arditi was a fixture at Her Majesty's Theatre, Covent Garden, where he introduced much of the major 19th century opera repertoire, including Verdi's Ballo and Forza, Gounod's Faust, Boito's Mefistofele, Mascagni's Cavalleria, and Wagner's Der fliegende Hollander. As a composer, his own works included the operas Il Corsaro and La Spia, which was based on Fennimore Cooper's "The Spy."  He also wrote many orchestral pieces and songs, the most famous of which is the vocal waltz, Il Bacio.

Adelina Murio-Celli was born in Breslau to Franco-Russian parents, and grew up in Paris. She sang on operatic tours under the direction of Luigi Arditi in Italy, Spain, France, Austria, and Turkey. After living and performing in Mexico and Cuba, she moved to the United States and, retiring in 1870, established herself as a teacher in Chicago and New York. She had many notable pupils and also composed songs. (16043)
