The contemporary music festival Wien Modern was founded in 1988 by Claudio Abbado as an initiative to make important works of contemporary music accessible to Viennese audiences. In a city where tradition had always reigned supreme, Abbado was able to use his position as director of the Wiener Staatsoper to convince the city's elite of the importance of a festival for contemporary music. Wien Modern '88 is seen as a key moment in revitalizing the musical life of Vienna. The present prospectus shows the scope of the ambitious festival, which included 27 concerts over several weeks and featured Boulez, Kurtag, Nono, Ligeti, and Wolfgang Rihm as its star composers.
