Bronze Bust of the Composer

Striking large bronze bust of the great composer with a stern expression, as sculpted by the masterful French artist who was winner of the Grand prix de Rome for sculpture in 1912.  Fine condition, 13.75 inches tall (35 cm.).

Born in Nantes, the artist studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris from 1904, working under Louis-Ernest Barrias and Jules Coutan. Following his Prix de Rome prize of 1912, he worked at the Villa Médicis in 1913 and 1914 and after the war, opened a studio in Paris. He died tragically young of appendicitis in August, 1923 and is buried at the cemetery of Boulogne-Billancourt, where his grave is adorned with one of his own works. A road named in his honor, rue Siméon-Foucault, has existed since 1931 in Nantes, the city of his birth.  (18667)
