[Books!] Laughton, Charles. (1899–1962)

Original Photograph

Press photograph of the English stage and film actor, a mischievous look upon his face as he carries a sizable stack of books.  Pencil markings to verso indicate the image was used in the Music section of a Sunday, December 3, 1950 newspaper, the words "Charles Laughton to perform tonight" written to the upper edge.  White in-painting for contrast in later printing along right side, creases to lower right corner, moderate edgewear, overall in fine condition.  8 x 10 inch (20.3 x 25.4 cm.).

Laughton was a lauded actor, winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in The Private Life of Henry VIII.  He was also a skilled director, with many theatre credits to his name.  His only film as a director, 1955's The Night of the Hunter, was a disappointment upon release, but is now widely considered one of the greatest films ever made.
