"The Author of Films, This Unknown" - Autograph Letter Signed
ALS from the French filmmaker to Professor Irma Antonetto of the Associazione Culturale Italiana, written a few months after Clair had completed a speaking tour of Italy. 13 May 60; 1 pp., on personal stationary. Translated from the French, in part: "Your beautiful book once again makes me deplore my ignorance..." Two holes to left margin, else fine. 5.5 x 8.25 inches (14 x 21 cm.). Together with an Italian-language document titled "The Author of Films, This Unknown," which provides details of Clair's March 1960 speaking dates and an unattributed French-language article with quotations from the director, stapled to a biography.René Clair was an influential film director in France, establishing himself in the 1920's with silent comedies. He spent much of the 1930s and 40s in the United Kingdom and the United States, returning to France after World War II.
Irma Antonetto (1920-1993), was founder and director of the Associazione Culturale Italiana [Association of Italian Culture] for 46 years, during which time she brought some 400 philosophers, writers, scientists, artists, and Nobel winners to lecture in Italy. She was recipient of the 1964 Cavaliere al merito della Repubblica italiana. (19196)
