Spivakovsky, Tossy. (1907–1998)

Signed Recital Program

Signed program from a performance by the violin virtuoso in the Community Concert Association series in the Seattle area, 1948–49 season.  The program includes Handel's Andante and Allegro, Paganini's Sonata, Tchaikovsky's Concerto in D major, Schubert's "Ave Maria," Bartok's Romanian Folk Dances, Copland's Ukulele Serenade, and Sarasate's Carmen Fantasia.  Signed additionally by accompanist Max Lanner.  In fine condition.  6.25 x 9.5 inches (15.9 x 24.1 cm.).

Spivakovsky was famous for his violinistic idiosyncrasies – he famously held the bow above the frog – but left nearly 60 superb recordings covering a wide range of repertoire, including a lithe rendition of the Sibelius concerto with Tanno Hannikainen.  He was the first to perform Bartok’s Second Concerto in America (under Rodzinski) and a later performance by him in NY was deemed “first rate” by Bartok himself.
