Signed Concert Program with Photograph

Scarce signed concert program from a performance with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society on Saturday, February 5, 1966.  The gifted English pianist and composer described by Peter Maxwell Davies as "a genius of enormous sensitivity and very great humour" has signed below his photograph on page four.  The performance included pieces by Berlioz and Brahms, alongside Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37.  The concert was originally scheduled to feature Wilhelm Kempff as soloist, but a note at the bottom of the program listing notes that he "sprained a wrist and is unable to appear.  The Society is most grateful to John Ogdon for agreeing to play, at short notice, the Concerto as advertised."  16 pp.  In fine condition.  5.5 x 8.5 inches (14 x 21.6 cm.).

Regarded as a "gentle giant," known and loved for his kindness and generosity, Ogden had tremendous energy but was later diagnosed with schizophrenia, then manic depression (now referred to as bipolar disorder).  He died tragically young of pneumonia, brought on by undiagnosed diabetes. (19990)
