Autograph Signatures

Beautifully hand-painted decorative album sheet featuring 17 signatures of musicians and notables, including at the lower center the important Polish violinist and composer Henri Wieniawski and, to the right of him, Francois-Auguste Gevaert, Belgian musicologist and composer who served as the director of the Brussels Conservatoire and who in 1874 had invited Wieniawski to take over the job of Professor of the Violin Class from Henri Vieuxtemps who was afflicted by paralysis of the arms (and who subsequently moved to Paris). Other signatories are mostly unidentified but include also Etienne Arago (politician and writer, co-founder of the newspaper Le Figaro). Light toning to edges, else in fine condition.  8.75 x 10.75 inches (22.2 x 27.3 cm.).

One of the most celebrated violinists and composers of the nineteenth century, Wieniawski was admitted to the Paris Conservatory at the age of 8 and graduated at the age of 11.  He toured Europe for several years as a concert violinist at 13 with his pianist brother, Joseph, before moving to Russia, where he taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory.  He toured the United States for some time before settling to teach at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in 1875.  He collapsed during a tour of Russia and died in 1880 in Moscow.
