Ferras, Christian. (1933–1982)

Signed Photograph

Original doubleweight Pierre Auradon photograph of the great French violinist, who has inscribed to the photographer, translated from the French, "For Monsieur / Pierre Auradon– / the "Mozart" of / photography– / May 1950."  Signed photographs of Ferras are extremely rare; this is the first that Schubertiade has ever offered.  Light wear to lower margin, small diagonal creases to lower left corner and right edge, else in very fine condition.  8.8 x 11 inches (22.5 x 30 cm.).

Ferras began his career as a young prodigy in the mid 1940's, winning several international competitions, and premiered works by Honegger, Pascal and Semenoff.  His collaboration with Pierre Barbizet, which began in 1948 and continued until his death, became one of the most famous violin-piano partnerships of the twentieth century.  He left many superb recordings, and it was a great loss to the music world when he committed suicide in 1982 after a long struggle with depression.
