Moncion, Francisco. (1918–1995) [Lynes, George Platt. (1907–1955)]

Signed George Platt Lynes Photograph

Striking original photograph by the acclaimed photographer of the great dancer and choreographer, who has signed and inscribed (faintly) in ink to the lower right quadrant "For Paul / From / Francisco Moncion."  While the verso is blank and lacking the photographer's credit stamp, this is known to be an original and authentic Lynes photograph, from the same series of images of Moncion with this distinctive  backdrop and as appear in such publications as "George Platt Lynes: Portrait 1927-1955" (Twin Palms Publishers, 1994). Somewhat low contrast to signature, light bumps to corners and bottom edge, else fine.  7.75 x 9.45 inches (19.7 x 24 cm.).

George Platt Lynes was very famous as a fashion photographer in the 1930's and 1940's, working for magazines such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. In 1935, George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein commissioned him to photograph their Ballet Caravan ballets and dancers. Platt Lynes continued to photograph ballet until his death in 1955.
