Anderson, Marian. (1897–1993)

Signed Photograph

Striking Studio Delar of New York photograph of the great African American contralto, who has signed and inscribed in blue fountain pen to the Executive Director of the Indiana Arts Commission, Hertha A. Duemling.  Mounted and fitted to rigid backing, else in fine condition.  8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.).

Anderson was a favorite of Toscanini and, in 1955, broke the color barrier by becoming the first African-American to perform at the Metropolitan Opera. She remains a legendary figure in the history of opera, remembered for, among other highlights, her Lincoln Memorial concert and her performances at the inaugurations of both Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy.
