Folio.  88 pp.  Hardcover, beige linen boards.  A three-color collotype reproduction of an autograph manuscript specially prepared by a 19-year old Schubert to send to Goethe, the present volume includes “Gretchen am Spinnrade," “Schäfers Klagelied,” “Rastlose Liebe,” “Geistes-Gruß,” “An Mignon,” “Nähe des Geliebten,” “Meeres Stille,” “Wandrers Nachtlied,” “Der Fischer,” “Erster Verlust,” “Die Spinnerin,” “Heidenröslein,” “Wonne der Wehmut,” “Erlkönig,” “Der König in Thule,” and “Jägers Abendlied.”  German-language commentary by noted musicologists Peter Hauschild.  Light folding lines to dust jacket flaps. In very fine condition.

"On the suggestion of his friends, the 19 year-old Schubert specially prepared this manuscript for Goethe, sending it to him in April 1816 — with the intent of making the settings known to the poet and possibly enlisting his help in promoting them.  Unfortunately the action was met by bitter disappointment, as the great poet returned Schubert’s manuscript to Vienna without comment."
