Signed photograph of the popular choral conductor, who has neatly inscribed "For Paul - / with very best wishes - / Robert Shaw" in black ink to the lower right.  "Robert Shaw" stamp to verso.  In very fine condition.  8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.).

As leader of the Robert Shaw Chorale, Shaw commissioned important works from Bartok, Milhaud, Britten, Barber, Copland and others.  He was also known for his work with the Cleveland Orchestra and Chorus, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.  Over the course of his career, Shaw received 14 Grammy awards, four ASCAP awards for service to contemporary music, the first Guggenheim Fellowship ever awarded to a conductor, and in 1991, the Kennedy Center Honors.

From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
