Signed Photograph with Autograph Musical Quotation, "Der Hirt auf dem Felsen"

Uncommon original doubleweight Fayer photograph of the Dutch soprano especially celebrated for her lieder recitals, who has signed boldly across the lower margin in blue ink, "Best wishes to Mr. Stephen Adamson! / Elly Ameling", adding a neatly penned autograph musical quotation from Franz Schubert's "Der Hirt auf dem Felsen" along the right margin. In fine condition, with mounting remnants and the photographer's stamp to verso. 5 x 7 inches (13 x 17.5 cm.).

Schubert's "The Shepherd on the Rock" (Der Hirt auf dem Felsen), D. 965, is a Lied for soprano, clarinet, and piano and was composed in 1828 during the final months of his life.  Written as a belated response to a request from the operatic soprano Pauline Anna Milder-Hauptmann, a friend of the composer, who had requested a showpiece that would allow her to express a wide range of feelings, and he wrote it as thanks for her attempts to stage one of his operas in Berlin. She received a copy of the score from Schubert's brother Ferdinand in September 1829, and the work was published a year and a half after Schubert's death.

Ameling's historic and award-winning recording of the work (with Jörg Demus and Hans Deinzer) may be heard here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYbomphH-lM (21568)
