Title; (Copyright); Contents [5-15 pp]; (Illustrations list); 17 - 618 pp. Includes 18 plates, but lacking the frontis portrait of Douglass.  Fully rebound in crimson percaline with partial original decoratively stamped black and gold front cloth binding integrated to front board. A bit musty, with moisture stains to the modern endpages, scattered light foxing and light stains/toning around edges, small abrasions to the foredge, otherwise very good. Contemporary editions of Douglass' autobiographies are increasingly difficult to come by.

The third edition of Frederick Douglass' third and final autobiography, originally published in 1881. Douglass' written life story was very similar to Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" in that both authors were continually adding to their works as their lives progressed, and Douglass' "Life and Times" itself went thru several iterations. This 1883 edition is more than 100 pages longer than the first printing published in 1881 and indeed nearly 500 pages longer than his first autobiography "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass" (1845) and contains the historic events of the Civil War.  (21573)
