New York: Associated Music Publishers, Inc.. 1957. Small quarto [10-1/2 inches high by 7-1/2 inches wide], softcover bound in printed light tan wrappers. 152 pages. Very good condition, edges of the front wrap slightly darkened, short tear to the surface of the wrap at the spine.


A splendid association copy inscribed on the front wrapper by one leading twentieth-century American composer to another: "To Virgil Thomson / from your friend / Elliott Carter / New York, Jan. 25, 1960". Thomson's circular ownership stamp, "Virgil Thomson Collections" appears below the inscription.


"Variations for Orchestra" was commissioned by the Louisville Philharmonic Society, Inc. and was first performed by the Louisville Orchestra on April 21, 1956. (5698)
