A splendid association copy inscribed on the title page by Carter to the composer Nicolas Nabokov, cousin of Vladimir Nabokov: "To Nicolas Nabokov affectionately, Elliot Carter." Fine condition. 


"Variations for Orchestra" was commissioned by the Louisville Philharmonic Society, Inc. and was first performed by the Louisville Orchestra on April 21, 1956.


Nobokov (1903–1978), following a decade in Paris, emigrated to the United States in 1933 and became a citizen in 1939, finding his career as a university professor and resident composer at the Aspen Institute. Nabokov and Carter taught together at St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland, in the 1940s. (8788)
