Early signed doubleweight photograph of the American actress, singer, dancer, and comedienne who originated some of the great female roles of mid-20th century musical theatre.  Channing has inscribed "To Paul, / very best wishes, / Carol Channing."  Moderate ink adhesion issues, else in very fine condition.  8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.). A notation on the verso by the dedicatee identifies the image as by Earle Forbes, dancer with Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shaw's Denishawn group, who began taking photographs with a box camera in the 1940s and was a self-taught photographer who took pictures of many dancers and athletes.  Read More...

Postcard portrait photograph of the great fiddler tuning his instrument.  Pinhole to top and bottom margin, else in fine condition.  3.25 x 5.25 inches (8.2 x 13.3 cm.).

Carl Flesch called Ysaye "the most outstanding and individual violinist I have ever heard in my life," and he was the dedicatee of many major works from Debussy, Saint-Saens, Franck, Chausson and others.

Edwardian Album of Postcard Photographs

Wonderful collection of 35 Edwardian and Georgian postcard portraits, mostly of violinists but also including some composers, conductors, and other musicians of the era, all tipped into pages of a green souvenir album with a raised four leaf clover design to the cover.  The majority are postcard photographs, though a few are decorated with illustrations or caricatures. Individuals represented here include Oskar Back, Ole Bull, John Dull, Spencer Dyke, Marie Hall (2), Lady Hallé (2), the Hambourg Brothers, two postcard photographs and a halftone photograph of Joseph Joachim, Jaroslav Kocián, Fritz Kreisler, Jan Kubelík (6), Pablo de Sarasate, Emil Sauer & Willy Burmester, an etching of Antonio Stradivari, three postcard photographs and a caricature of Cesar Thomson, Auguste van Biene, Antoine van Heck (2), Henri Vieuxtemps, Franz von Vécsey, Henryk Wieniawski, August Wilhelmj, and Eugène Ysaÿe, together with one unidentified individual.  Separation to album spine interior, general signs of wear, overall in fine condition.  Postcards generally in fine condition and most not postally cancelled or otherwise marked.  7.75 x 10 inches (19.7 x 25.4 cm.).

Four Prints from "The Tours of Dr. Syntax"

Four lithograph illustrations by the English artist, taken from editions of William Combe's three Dr. Syntax poems, Dr. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque, Dr. Syntax in Search of Consolation, and Dr. Syntax in Search of a Wife.  Three of the four prints, "The Revd. Doctor Syntax" [No PN], "Doctor Syntax Made Free of the Cellar" [PN 15], and "Doctor Syntax Returned from His Tour" [PN 28], are from Dr. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque, the latter two dated to 1815 in the publisher's tagline.  The fourth print, "The Visit of Dr. Syntax to the Widow Hopefull at York," is from In Search of Consolation, and is dated 1820, though much of the publisher's tagline has been trimmed.  Light to moderate foxing to margins and verso of all four prints, with an area of staining to "The Revd. Doctor Syntax" that is especially prominent to verso, but the images themselves are in fine condition.  Three prints 9 x 5 inches (22.9 x 12.7 cm.), fourth 6.5 x 10 inches (16.5 x 25.4 cm.).
